MIMCO DREAMWARP society LMFF 2012

I've never been to a runway show where accessory's were the main focus and identity and wasn't quiet sure if it could be pulled off. With Mimco one of Australia's most lavished accessory brands I hoped it would be a more polished show.
The models look was styled between dark and rough edged to balance the sparkly bling and soft leather and print bags.
The pacing was hard and fast, a little too fast for my liking, even with the extra time on the runway. None of the models took the fade at the end of each section. Like any good punctuation you need a full stop before you start again for the language to work.
There's only so much you can do with an accessory show without been too repetitive and a model can only carry so many bags without looking uncomfortable. A good show never the less it just needed to be as polished as some of the necklaces.

MISS UNKON Girls with Kaleidoscope Minds RAFW 2011/12

I was looking forward to previewing this seasons collection due to the fact last years was so creative on terms of fashion design and runway production. The SS2011/12 was no exception.

A much simpler backdrop apart from the two massive balloons that doubled as a projection surface which balanced out the softer colours and fabrics of Miss Unkon's Kaleidoscope minds collection. The central runway feature also added to the theme which helped make for a standout Finale in the way in which choreography was used.

Bowie. Paper Crane RAFW SS2011/12

From hair and makeup, set design through to creative choreography, each runway production as with the whole of RAFW is reliant on collaboration, management and professionalism across a number of disciplines. Of course without a strong collection and individualism in idea and creativity the end result would be lacking.

The following is an photo diary of backstage at Bowies Paper Crane SS2011/12 which officially closed RAFW in the Cargo Theatre. Special thanks to Bowie, Jess Woods, Filip Odzak-Fashion Squared2 & Bowie team.

Save the dancing for the prime time TV slot

Forever New LMFF Sidewalk show 2011

One thing I saw yesterday at several free general public runway events was the inclusion of over dramatic dancing by yes dancers. Some purists would frown at the idea, and I think I have to agree.

The artistic integrity of the runway should be communicated through the designers collection and their use of colour, cut and fabric choice. Not to say runway producers shouldn't consider interesting choreography for models or a striking backdrop. Compared to last nights Vogue LMFF designer award finalist showcase where the clothes spoke from themselves, along with good old fashion strong walkers like Vanessa Milde and Rachel Rutt bringing the clothes to life.

Future producers of the Runway you may think adding the local dance troupe will make the collection more buyable to your market, but in the end it comes down to the unique design and strong brand philosophy which will make your fashion admires into lovers.

Save the dancing and prancing for the tv, make a pre show film or multimedia piece but please don't make a distraction from the real purpose of the runway to effectively showcase the individuality of the collection. There can be movement of fabric without been over dramatic but realistic. The question is Who do you want your clients to remember? Dancers or Design?
