GINGER / SMART Latitude SS15

Ginger and Smart this season once again showed a strong collection defined by a well grounded narrative. " It's not the a literal lesson but a deeper understanding of the concept of latitude; possibilities of where and who we are, drawing on the collective consciousness of what is beautiful and relevant now" GINGER / SMART

The representation of nature and surroundings was represented by a contemporary colour palette and reinvention of textures like intricate use of lace. Even though the Australian landscape can be harsh at times; yet there was a mix of masculinity and femininity between silhouettes and patterns. From allowing generous amounts of flowing fabric and defined structure in fabrication.

Spread across the collection there was subtle and not so subtle references to cracked rock formations, soft sand texture and delicate fauna. The strongest detailing of the collection was the use of lace; which we saw in so many collections throughout the week. However done in a technical, intricate and creative way to showcase the southern hemispheres desert rose, wattle and seed pods.

The overall sense of the collection was garments that defined the surroundings of the Australian woman and how they feature in it. " Latitude delivers an authentic perspective of where we are; how we feel and how we want to dress" GINGER / SMART

Behind the lights - Backstage Pass

One of Australia's most successful Ready to Wear labels both here and abroad had it's first Australian Fashion Week runway show. Showcasing their collection titled Optics. Prints and silhouettes that were inspired by the refraction of light were shown on the runway to an upbeat soundtrack. Moving from the prism shape graphics through to holographic prints and neon colours to crisp layering and transparent detailing. Each of the 11 yearly collections have a strong creative theme central to the designs.  Certainly the vibe of the show was youthful yet sophisticated and was emphasised by the strong casting of  models which included Australian Fashion week seasoned veterans Rachel Rutt and Samantha Harris. Cameo's Optics Collection will no doubt become a part of many Australian Girls Summer style as well as continuing  to grow their global ambassadors.

Michael once again showcased an innovative collection which was inspired by luxury and exotic skins. The recently named BT emerging designer winner displayed an ethereal element and his skilful tailoring which he is renowned for.
Using 3D knitting technology, texture fabrication, raised surfaces and sea snake skin print to create an standout edgy collection.
Models walked through 3D sculptures on the runway by Artist Dion Horstman, the strong geometric shapes playing on the softness of Michael Lo Sordos designs and array of gelati pastels and textures.

Every moment in time has some kind of reflection, and the collection reflects this in an artistic exhibition and collaboration between Fashion and Art.

'like the Madonna tee that Luke was wearing the first time we met and hung out at my house party. We embellished the garment in clear sequins and now this piece embodies the creative spirit between the both of us.'

The collection even though an artistic exhibition is still going to be available for RTW through use of the prints used in the installation designs. Anna and Luke played with both the artistic space and not been constrained by model sizing. Luke explained despite designing collaboratively for an exhibition showcase the design process stayed the same.
Rebecca Baumans is renowned for her distinctive kinetic sculptures, performance and installation. The collaboration between art and fashion was seamless with Baumans use of light and the exploration of reflection, colour and surfaces. Brining a strong relationship between the experience or moment in time of the garment and it's surroundings and space.

Strateas & Carlucci FRAC/TURE SS 14

FRAC/TURE
Melbourne duo, Strateas & Carlucci, who recently won the Tiffany & Co Designer Award during VAMFF strayed away from the light colours of Summer apart from a selection of white garments. In both men's and women's lines that definitely reflected a Melbourne aesthetic with layering and styling. The silhouettes and cuts of garments reflected the fracture and structure of the design.
The heaviness of some garments a giveaway for the climate they're more suited too. The staggering of female and male models did help with breaking up the heavier darker men's looks. The biker jackets that were included in the show are a favourite amongst followers of Strateas and Carlucci and will drop in August.

SOLAIRE

This season saw a contemporary take on 1920's/30's Parisian silhouettes. The collection was inspired by the work of Photographer Man Ray and the eclectic style of his muses Kiki de Montparnasse, Tamara de Lempika, Nancy Cunard, Lee Miller and Juliete. With the Solaire Collection you can expect a mix of textures and some very vibrant colours.
